About
Cheryl Harmon, Ed.D.
I’m Dr. Cheryl Harmon—an educator, leader, and consultant with over 20 years of experience championing student-centered learning and equity-focused practices.
From the classroom to the state office, I’ve seen firsthand how great instruction and aligned assessment can transform learning. As a teacher, I worked to create inclusive, culturally responsive spaces where every student felt seen. Later, as a Chief Academic Officer and Vice President at mission-driven education nonprofits, I guided teams developing curriculum and assessments that reached thousands of educators and students.
I’m proud to have led the development of Chicago Public Schools’ PreK–5 English Language Arts curriculum—work that contributed to significant gains in reading achievement. Today, through RootED Strategy Group, I partner with schools, districts, and education organizations to design and implement solutions that center students, honor teachers’ expertise, and advance equity.
My Approach
Equity-Centered: Putting historically marginalized students at the center of every decision.
Collaborative: Listening first, designing alongside, and co-creating sustainable solutions.
Strategic: Connecting research, practice, and implementation with clarity and purpose.
Human: Leading with empathy, respect, and a deep belief in possibility.
A Little About Me
I’m married to my high school sweetheart, and we’re raising two wonderful daughters and one senior dog together. As a third-generation educator, I’m deeply committed to my family and to the transformative power of learning. When I’m not working, you’ll likely find me cheering on my girls, planning our next road trip, or reading everything from historical fiction to research on assessment innovation. I’m based in Atlanta, GA, and work with partners nationwide.
